Forty years in Chester, and still the same family behind the business.

Jennie Benfold Haywood founded Spick and Span in Chester in 1984 and built it on a single, stubborn idea: the work is only ever as good as the person doing it. Ian has been alongside her for many years, but make no mistake, it is Jennie’s business, and her relentless hard work, that carried it here.

Four decades and several recessions have taught her to read the market, domestic, commercial, and back again, until the business settled firmly where it belongs: commercial cleaning. For most premises this is not a luxury but a necessity. A primary school that isn’t cleaned after the final bell cannot open the next morning; the same is true of medical receptions and the working office floors of factories and dairies. When Covid arrived, Jennie kept the business standing and adapted it, at a moment when many would have walked away.

Jennie founded Spick and Span in 1984 and has driven its standards ever since: firm, fair, and relentless about the quality of the clean. Recruiting and keeping good cleaners is the hardest part of this business, and it is the part she has built her reputation on.

Ian has been part of the business for many years. As Health and Safety Officer he oversees the safe use of industrial cleaning products on every contract, and with four decades of product knowledge behind us, we can clean entirely with eco-friendly products for the clients who ask for them.

The people who actually do the work, and the reason clients stay. With a team this size, covering 20 to 28 days of holiday each, plus the odd sick day, is one of our biggest jobs. Making sure a cleaning day is never missed is Karen and Adèle’s daily responsibility.
